Backdated Blog

So, many of our readers have pointed out that the Zappos posts aren't the only ones Our Lady of Introspection has backdated.

We've made a little list of the ones we think HAVE been backdated. Can you all confirm? Verify? Any we've missed? Here we go (and, apologies, but these are links back to NS):

Stationed outside our home base for CES: the Press Room at Kodak’s behemoth of a booth.

Julia's Interview at Kodak from Julia Allison on Vimeo.

I was walking back to my suite from Sarah Lacy’s party at the Sports Book Palazzo and these two adorable girls - Archana and Ayesha (it was her 21st birthday!!) - recognized me!

They absolutely made my night.

With Sarah Lacy, who I look up to more than anyone in journalism. NO ONE works harder than her.

(Thank you to Brian Solis for taking such a sweet photo of us)

xoxo, NonSociety

Thanks for the party, Cisco!

Like the Beatles.

If the Beatles were girls who went to electronics conventions wearing goldenrod teeshirts.

Sandisk asked us to compete in their annual Battle of the Bloggers Rock Band competition against none other than Miss Sarah Lacy and Mr. “Somewhat” Frank Gruber, shown here in the appropriate rock star outfits. For the first time in my life, I actually felt UNDER costumed.

Broadcasting live at the Kodak booth right now!

Come by and say hello.

There are probably more, but these are a few of the obvious ones.

  1. My NonSociety scholarship has reached PHD levels, I chortle to say. By my count, links 1, 2 and 8 are backdated new content. Nos. 3 and 5 did in fact appear in that form at the time stated. And--here's where it gets sticky--nos. 4, 6 and 7 now appear with a swapped out photo and/or altered captions for similar items that in fact appeared at the stated times.

  2. I could swear that link 3 is new.

  3. OMG!! if i was an advertiser and i saw that they (julia allison nosociety.com) did this i would N-E-V-E-R do bussiness w/ them again. This is the #1 way to lose sponsers forever (including any chance at future ones) FRAUD FRAUD FRAUD complete and utter no-no. WOW.

  4. No, NSRB, I blush to say I actually goggled at that link of Julia Allison with her "little people" fans at the time; they had run into her in the hall and were fangirls. But I cruised Julia Allison's lifecast stream just now and she has done her usual swapping out of lots of photos in previous posts to use shots she deems "better" or more flattering. Plus she has definitely spliced in more sponsor-related, backdated posts and beefed-up, sponsor-referential captions.

A few that I counted: several new and backdated photos of the rock band competition added; I'd swear that photo of Al the Tooltime guy with Julia and Mary Rambin at the Kodak booth is new; the Jan 08 5:12 post seems to be a new Kodak reference; the Jan 09 photo of the girls with the robot is new and backdated; the photo of the girls doing robot moves is new and backdated. And the Jan 09 4:46 post has way more info spliced into the caption.

  5. Does this shady Nonsociety and TMI Weekly behavior by Julia Allison, Mary Rambin and Meghan Asha leave a bad taste in your mouth? Look up their sponsors, advertisers or any product they associate themselves with. Write them an email. Tell them how you feel. It will only take a few minutes. Here are just a few of the companies they've associated with but I am sure there are more:
    Cisco
    Kodak
    Blueprint Cleanse
    The Limited
    Celeb Style Jewelry
    Degree Deodorant
    Verizon Wireless
    Yummie Tummie
    Ilus New York Dress Boutique

Some of them are smaller companies that are probably really easy to get in touch with.

  6. Meghan has backdated stuff on hers as well. Yuck.

  7. Meghan has a whole bunch of "Finds at CES" posts that are all backdated.

  8. Oh, and yeah, the Al from Tool Time post is definitely new.

  9. I mentioned this in a previous post, but it bears repeating: Julia Allison, at least, has been backdating posts ever since NonSociety.com launched (and likely before, too, but I never used to follow her blog as closely before NS). At least once a week, if not more frequently, she adds "new" content under a past date. It's super annoying to me as a reader, but it is also horribly dishonest.

  10. ok, i just watched the julia interviews kodak video and i must say... JULIA IS A BEAST!! omg, there are so many things wrong w/her face. she looks like a linebacker w/ a creepy botoxed and wrinkled face. her expessions are so phoney (and i think the dissproportioned nose and botox contribute to that) its not ofter we see her in video, especially at different angles...my god! she looks older than my mom and she is in her mid 40's!

  12. Oh, Meghan, is this the new NonSociety transparency of which you spoke so eloquently just this morning.

Listen up, kiddo: industry standards in the blogosphere dictate that when you add content to pre-existing posts (or, in this case, splice it into a pre-existing lifecast stream) you clearly indicate that fact by use of the word UPDATE--preferable in screamy capital letters, the better to differentiate it from the original content.

That's just how it's done, bunnies, by respectable bloggers who do not want to mislead their readers. You could do it, too, if you had a mind to.

  13. I really don't get what the big deal with backdating posts is - it's a feature option within the Tumblr platform and helps to put posts in order of actual occurrence. If they wanted their content to appear as it happened at CES - because God knows they didn't blog much content in real time - then that's their prerogative! It IS their blog after all. I know people, it's very easy to hate everything Julia Allison does. She makes it easy.

I really don't think this is a big deal...unless I'm missing something here. If I am wrong, please explain.

If they wanted their content to appear as it happened at CES - because God knows they didn't blog much content in real time - then that's their prerogative! And they are not changing much real content - simple wording. They really did no substantial reviews at CES in the first place. This isn't the WSJ, people.

  15. hey guys NotRight is right, i am an advertiser w/nonsociaty.com and i dont think they did anything wrong. really, i paid them to post porno coverage during ces, complain about not having time to promote my product while doing so, then take the porno coverage down, then harass comentors on there site, then after ces is over put my products posts in the back of there site never to be spotlighted or even in a prime position for 5 minutes. i also paid them to fraud me so that if anyone from my company went back to check after ces they would think they really covered ces all along. and i paid good money for them to delete any mention of the fact that they did any of this.

  16. We are talking about two completely different things, anonymous.

    1. Backdating posts
    2. Whether sponsors got their money's worth

    Porn coverage: Bad for sponsors

Deleting commenters' posts: Despicable. Bad for sponsors and Nonsociety.

Backating posts: Could be good or bad for sponsors. If you subscribe through RSS or use the Tumblr platform, the backated posts still come through as new. If you are visiting the site every now and then, the posts would appear in the correct order as they should have been posted originally. If you are a regular visitor, I guess you are right. You would not have seen the posts, and that would appear dishonest.

For all we know, the sponsors were following their posts all along, told them to take down the porn coverage, and also backdate the posts as they should have appeared. This is a very likely scenario, I think.

As I side note, my outlook may be different since I use Tumblr and everything came through as they posted it....

  17. NotRight: Backdating, in my opinion--as both a print journalist and an online blogger--is a fundamental dishonesty about the quality of your work product. You can use it to mask your bloopers without acknowledging them; to make yourself look smarter, prettier (in the case of an unfortunate photo), etc.; to make your work appear as if it were timely when it was not. It is bad practice, and I think you would find that to be a consensus in the online journalism industry.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Dyspeptic - I guess the difference is you are holding NonSociety to traditional standards of journalism and professional blogs and I view it as three personal blogs joined by a homepage.

Yes, they are a technically a "business" but for the last year I've tried to grasp that concept without laughing...and here I am, still chuckling.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Can someone make sure to get this post -- this entire blog, actually -- to Cisco and Kodak?

    ReplyDelete
  20. What I want to know is, with their "cache" on the web--which chicks in their right mind would join this site? What other contributors would put themselves at the liberty of the most hated chick on the web? How is THAT good for their business model? lol. I am sure some pretty loser chicks would sign up, and then the cycle continues. More hate. They should just wrap up shop now.

    ReplyDelete
  21. NotRight: Julia Allison presents herself as a journalist and feels entitled to receive press credentials. She attends events as "press." She and Mary Rambin and Meghan Asha are trying to sell ads on the basis that NonSociety is a legitimate website that, presumably, conforms to industry standards. It ain't personal anymore.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Backdating is very dishonest. It makes it appear as if they went to the convention and posted timely content during it. They didn't. It is essentially a massive lie and an effort to look more competent than they are. If they didn't want to give off a false impresion they'd simply post it in the actual date they published it.

They compare their site to a magazine and Julia Allison considers herself a journalist yet they do not practice any of the journalistic or pro blogger ethics and conventions that audiences expect and rely upon especially in regard to transparency, honesty, integrity, etc.

The more I see that rather than respond to the backlash they stand their ground and defend their dishonesty and greed the more resolved I am to not add my page views to their little project over at Nonsociety.com.

And by the way Meghan Asha who so many seem to think is so wonderful is no different from the others at Nonsociety. Her many backdated posts serve as just one example.

If they really wanted to backdate posts just as a matter of convenience or continuity they could have at least marked the posts to indicate they were added later and that they were replacing some deleted posts (such as the porn coverage). That they did not do so indicates theey don't want it known that they added the content at a time other than during the CES conference.

  23. "If they really wanted to backdate posts just as a matter of convenience or continuity they could have at least marked the posts to indicate they were added later and that they were replacing some deleted posts (such as the porn coverage)."

I completely agree with this. A simple way to solve the problem if they wanted continuity.

  26. OH NO - they are so painful. I am a 42 year old woman who worked my way through an amazing career by being fun, smart and respectful. I didn't show my boobs, get free stuff all the time or put myself out there to make my family and friends ashamed of me.

Mark my words, she (JA - I like the other two - at least they are honest about who they are) will be very sorry one day when that door slams in her face because of her antics today.
