Mary versus Julia: A Debate

The same argument breaks out fairly regularly in our comments section: who is more vile? Julia or Mary?

Now it may come as no surprise but my money's on Jackles in this argument. Please understand: on her own, existing in a world where there was no Jackles, I would find Rambo tiresome, snobby and vapid. But fortunately for Rambo, when positioned next to her frenemy, she comes out on top.

Let's examine her recent response to a reblogger:

Hi Sara.

I just read your reblog of my ugly feet and I have a question…

What is it you would like to see on my lifecast?

I post about my life, fashion, beauty product reviews, restaurants, fitness, recipes, and videos of my experiences. From your post, you are obviously not satisfied with this, so I am genuinely curious what else you would like to hear about from me.

As for not giving specific details about my travels - that is to protect the privacy of the people I’m with so they don’t have to undergo the scrutiny of the haters and certain media. Certainly you can respect that.

Looking forward to hearing your input.

Best,
Mary

Huh. What? No showing up on the reblog at all hours of the night and day under various aliases to tell everyone how "jealous" they are? No laughable attempts to get a a reblogging reblogging blog started up that is greeted with yawns and/or ridicule? No sending "Paul" over here to taunt and harass commenters with about as much wit and smarts as Sarah Palin?

Nope. Just a simple blog post: Hey, so you don't like me. OK. So what would you like me to do differently?

My biggest issue with Jackles is how sneaky and dishonest she is. She is rarely, if ever, honest about herself or what's going on in her life, and that's why this whole "lifecasting" thing is such a joke. She's not "lifecasting." As Flatface pointed out yesterday, she is performing, and she is expecting her readers to believe her manufactured fairytale despite the odd appearance of genuine nastiness to her supposed friends and former acquaintances that rears its ugly head.

Mary is snooty, entitled and dumb, but I've rarely, if ever, noticed her lying, never mind lying every day in almost every post. She's also never violated anyone's privacy -- not old boyfriends, not friends suffering from cancer, not friends who engaged in private IMs or e-mail exchanges with her, etc. She doesn't seem to use her space on the Internet, either her blog or her Twitter, to endlessly attempt to settle personal scores the way Jackles does either.

And on camera, compared to that obnoxious, dishonest braying donkey she's sitting nearby (I wonder when we'll get that cranberry-spinach-collard-salsa guacamole recipe, by the way?), she comes across as prepared for the discussion, somewhat intelligent and at times quite funny, charming and self-deprecating.

That is all.

The other one? She's like a blank slate. I simply have no opinion on her whatsoever anymore; she's just too boring.

Anyway, commenters: weigh in. And be nice! There is no right argument here. We are dealing with a pair of assclowns, remember, one slightly worse than the other depending on your point of view.

  2. I used to think Mary because I so detest people who have that lifestyle. But Julia is just insane. My vote is with Julia being the worst.

  4. When Julia finally gets out from under my desk, I'm gonna teach her the pythagoream theorem guys. Hypotenus, what?!

Math is so fucking rad, ya'll. It is the only remedy to my self-hatred after being Julia's puppet all day. I am a mathematical troll.

  7. Julia is the worst. She has gone from being relatively likeable to relentlessly annoying.

Mary's blog is the most engaging of the three, but again, that's not saying much.

As for Meghan, I don't even know why she's part of this venture. I suspect she's providing the funding and NOTHING else. Sorry pretty, but you bore the HELL outta me.

  8. Just ignore Paul. Really, pretend the idiot isn't here.

  9. Palin? No, I'm pretty sure "Paul" has already fallen to Joe Biden levels of asshattery. It's kind of surprising he was able to figure out the 'number' for this website.

  10. I'll give Paul/Julia/NS Programmer/whogivesashit credit. He's doing a 1 versus 1000 battle in regards to defending the twits of Banality.

  20. Julia's worse. Mary has blink-and-you'll-miss-it moments of humanity (remember that post back in the day?), JA is a walking, talking robot. If she's pushing 30 and hasn't figured this stuff out yet, it really might be too late.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I used to enjoy reading the comments around here, but it is clear that the RBNS readership is beginning to shift. Punctuation and grammar are absent, and I am sad.

  27. Julia is the symbol of failed web 2.0 start ups in that way of thinking they did not have to pay attention to users and could throw around buzz words and hype and it would magically happen.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Yep, and buzzwords and hype are THE ingredients for failure during this time when people are becoming increasingly conscious of what they'll buy, literally and figuratively. In a way it's a good thing; it might force them to look at themselves in a deeper way.

    ReplyDelete
  29. jackles by a landslide.

i'm not going to lie, mary's video of her going down the slope is kind of cool and unique, to me. it's a much better video than ANY that i've seen from jackles. i like how mary balances privacy and public lifecasting. i think her aspen trip is a good example of it.

sure, her content could be more thought out and interesting (and just.....more). but jackles' lifecast is just awful and she's obliterated the public/private line so much that its cringeworthy.

also, jackles: clearly your bday party is a small group of people who are all on the facebook invite. why dont you use facebook to tell them not to buy you drinks instead of the entire world on twitter? i dont fucking care if youre not accepting gifts.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I commented in the last post but I will say it again here - I think we can all agree that Mary is the shiniest turd in this pile of NonSoshitey poop. What kind of crazy game is this? Is this like the old game "would you rather?" because this is like asking if I would rather cut off my thumb or my ear. That's just as appealing as choosing between these mushy turds.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Family privacy is a big issue for me. Based on that alone, I'd say Julia is WAY more vile than Mary.

While Mary does namedrop from time to time, the only instances in which I've ever seen her "invade" in someone's space is when she mentions her family, particularly half-sis actress, Leven (whom she calls Nin). I don't mind this so much, though, because "Nin" is equally a famewhore, more successful at it than any of the Un-Social ladies, and probably doesn't care to have her picture taken in her pjs or the inside of her purse examined. In fact, Mary's family in general (Mommy dearest included) look like they all have a grand ol' time mucking it up for the camera and for Mary's sake. Haven't seen Nin or Mommy in a while, which is nice. Come to think of it, I haven't really seen the dog much either. Has she chucked the pooch already??

Julia's family, on the other hand, look like they're either miserable, bemused, or smiling with gritted teeth. It's clear she doesn't consider them when she posts pictures or quotes of them. It's almost as if she forces them to be a part of her freak show because they're related. Even famewhore family the Osbornes respected daughter Aimee's wishes to not be in front of the camera. It's hard to respect Julia when it is quite evident that her family, the one core group of people who are supposed to love you unconditionally, can't stand her.

  32. When I first started reading the girls before NS started, I was impressed with Julia. It seemed like she had alot going on for herself at her age. Yes, she seemed it a bit manic, but anyone who's trying to make it needs alot of energy.

I didn't like Mary at first. She came across as snobby and I didn't really agree with her fashion advice.

After NS launched, it just seems like life is getting to Julia. She lost the Star job and she probably thinks she's losing everything else and is trying to keep it all together. Now she just seems to be struggling and comes off desperate for any kind of attention now. I think if she stayed on her own, she would have been better off. All annoying/lying whatever aside, I feel since NS started, they pigeonholed themselves in these categories and now they've lost their concept.

Mary, instead of getting freaked out by all the haters like Julia, has really stepped up recently and seems like she's TRYING to improve. I'm sure it's hard for any of them to agree on anything now, so it's probably hard to get approval on things to talk about.

They really just need to start over, not in a NS version 2.0 website, but really start over.

All of this hater stuff is getting a bit ridiculous, seriously.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Honestly....I think JA may be here once in awhile. But there are plenty of dissenters that are NOT her.

    ReplyDelete
  39. One of my questions is: Why did Julia stop following Mary on twitter? Yet still follows Mary's mother AND Mary's dog? And still follows Meghan. Odd. (And even still follows Leventhal, as he does her).

    ReplyDelete
  40. I just clicked that facebook invitation link. My question: Why is the email listed

    andrew.mager@cbs.com?

    CBS? Please explain.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Interesting: Sarah Lacy says she was having dinner with Julia AND Meghan.

    http://twitter.com/sarahcuda/status/1256669692

Julia, however, queen of the planet ME ME ME, doesn't bother to mention that at all.
Filling the tank with gas? (And looks like already an hour late to meet Sarah.) No mention that Meghan is in the car.
Late night drive back to PA? No mention of Meghan. Unless ... Megs begged off at the last minute knowing that it would be all about Julia anyway, whether Meg was there or not.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I wondered about the Twitter following thing myself, then it occurred to me: Mary's Twitter is now unreadable because all of her Tumblr posts are now auto-posted to Twitter. So there may actually be a good reason, other than good old-fashioned passive aggression.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Which is worse, a broken left leg or a broken right leg?

Julia thinks she is a gift to the world. Mary thinks the world is a gift to her.

I just wish both of them would stop trying to seduce me, because I'm a straight woman and they're repulsive. Seriously, why do they always blow kisses and pose with come-hither looks? No matter who they're posing with, old ladies, children, gay men, they can't stop thrusting out the boobies, arching the eyebrows, and projecting wanton lust. (Mary and that cum-smore, ewwwww!) Forget it, ladies, I'll never want to fuck either one of you.

  45. Having met all of them a couple of times. I would have to say that Jackles is completely out of touch with reality. Mary is much more real. She really fucking hates me by the way. I mean she really hates me, much more than Yulia. The other one is nice and just seems along for the ride. Bottom line I think Mary is much smarter, more honest and nicer than the one who eats all the cupcakes.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Can someone please give me the link to Jackob Lodwick's new blog? He was always very interesting and I am excited to hear he's blogging again. Feel like Julia really ... brought him down for a bit, but glad to hear he is back!

  47. Anon 2:10, it's in the previous post about QOTD. Also, it's the same place as his old blog.

I noticed that the Facebook party group is now open for anyone, whereas yesterday it said you had to be approved to join. I got a kick out of this as well: Blue & Pink Charity Birthday with Non-Society, Hosted by Julia Allison, Meghan Asha, and friends Yesterday's posting listed Mary Rambin by name as one of the hosts.

  48. Loren ... love you, man ... but I suspect Yulia hates you just as much, but Rambo is less of a game-player and is therefore more open and honest about the hatred.

  52. I'm a 1938 Media fan as well. And, ya, Jacy, I'd suspect that Loren's "Mary" puppet must really set her off. It is wildly funny. One of the best things about these girls is the parody's people do of them. Loren's Julia/Jakob video is a classic. I also like the one that Blakeley and a couple of other guys did right when NS was launched, and we can't overlook Topher Chris' brillian NonExciting. So much fun. And sadly, all better than the original.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Unintentionally hilarious review of the SF B-day venue on Yelp:

I've come to the conclusion that Rosewood is really the best deal in town for a birthday party. For only $200, you can rent the whole back space, which includes a full bar, dance floor, lounge, a bamboo garden and outdoor patio to accommodate up to 100 of your peeps.

Hey, Loren was here! Love you, man!

    ReplyDelete
  54. Mary is lightweight despicable. Julia is both barrels. Mary couldn't carry all these entertaining reblogs on her own. Julia FTW.

    ReplyDelete
  56. God, it would be great if JABA moved to SF. I just don't think she'll get the attention there and we'd finally be rid of her.

    ReplyDelete
  57. She'll move to SF right after she graduates from MIT, dyes her hair red, adopts The Golden Rule as her chief guide, gets her "wife fluffer" article published, goes to the gym regularly, and apologizes to Mary for being a total bitch about a stupid dress. So ... never. (Unless she needs an "out" to bail on Non Society, i.e., SO many of her bunnies (and Kevin Rose) were BEGGING her to to come to SanFran that she HAD TO at least give it a try. Sorry Meg/Mary, enjoy NY!)

    ReplyDelete
  58. @Anonymous - My pal Jason Calacanis called me before the dinner and asked me to please play nice. I was like wtf of course I will. I showed respect and didn't make Jackles cry at my friends dinner party. You have no idea what the conversations were like insanity.

    ReplyDelete
  59. The good thing about her moving to SF is that we wouldn't tolerate her, and thus she would fade into obscurity.

I venture she'd move to North Beach, just like where her birthday party is. She would fit in there more than anywhere. *smirk*

    ReplyDelete
  60. LOREN!! I love you!! 1938 ftw.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Anon 2:46,

Please don't wish such a thing upon us. I can't bear the thought. I feel for the New Yorkers but even just seeing her post about my beloved home is too much to handle. Never mind her actually living here. Please no.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Mary's not too hot on concealing her snobbery/distaste for the "little people". Comes from living a life of privileged I guess. That said, she has demonstrated the ability to be relatively organized and coherent on her blog. I find her to be boring and uneducated about fashion though - does she even read the leading fashion journalists like Cathy Horyn?

Julia is someone who has been indulged since birth and I think it has chronically melted her brain into pink frosting. She is emotionally incoherent (based on her postings) and seems to be pretty much a user of people. She always appears to be performing for an audience, be it cameras or the web or whatever. So fake and the only real spark is when it seems like she is coming apart at the seams a bit.

My major issue is that there is nothing original about either one of them. They seem to think readers supposed "envy" of them is a sufficient draw card. Mary wins in the voice stakes tho, I'm surprised JA hasn't seen a voice coach yet.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  65. Those pictures of SF (and "Stanford!")on NS she took from the plane are disturbing. It's like she thinks she's looking out over her new realm. Perhaps she is contemplating yet another (impossible) reinvention of herself--San Francisco Princess attending Stanford Business School? Trouble is that doing a geographical will not help her escape her real trouble, which is...she herself. She will never change. As Anonymous 3:31 sagely points out, "The good thing about her moving to SF is that we wouldn't tolerate her, and thus she would fade into obscurity."
Julia + San Francisco = not a fit. I cannot imagine any SF social milieu where even one of her absurd outfits would not garner raised eyebrows and/or snickers and/or sneers.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Mary doesn't lie? What??? Isn't this the woman who claims to be working 18 hours a day, but is now in Aspen on her 3rd (4th if you include the Texas trip) vacation in the span of a month and a half? And...She claims poverty? I rest my case. Mary Rambin is a liar in addition to being a vapid, spoiled, and bascially vile individual.

  89. Here's why I like Mary. It's simple and kind of stupid, but it was a very specific moment where my feelings for her changed.

My friend and I spent the final months of 2008 bashing NS, but my friend would always defend Mary. "She means well, she's just dumb," she would say and I would furiously refuse to accept that she was a decent human being. Before Christmas, Mary posted on her blog that she was having a MOE bag sample sale and I knew that I needed to get one for my Mary loving friend for Christmas. The instructions for ordering were to email Mary directly, so I did and I added something like "My friend and I are really into non-society and you are her favorite so I'm getting her one of your bags for Christmas." Mary didn't respond which I thought it was kind of strange. I just thought my "compliment" deserved some kind of acknowledgment, but I ended up thinking maybe I was reading too much into it.

About a week later, the bag came in the mail. With it was a handwritten note on Mary Rambin stationary. It said simply, "I know she'll love it! xo, Mary"

It was simple. It was classy. I developed a girl crush on Mary Rambin.

    ReplyDelete
  90. The "Karen Zambos interview" on TMIweekly is a perfect example of how Mary is MILES ahead of Julia in "tv/video presentation", even in spite of JA's hundreds of on-air appearances. I think she was a little sauced (I could obviously be wrong but IDK), but she was almost a natural.

    ReplyDelete
  91. That Mary anecdote is cute.. I'm a little softened to her now, not gonna lie. From that alone it seems like she puts on a "tough bitch" exterior to mask insecurities and vulnerability. Hmm.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Here is another Mary anecdote, and it involves a purse. She states she is at a small house party--she takes a picture of a woman--and writes this:

"This chick is carrying around her oversized Gucci purse at a small house party so that everyone will know she has a Gucci purse. I can’t endorse that. Plus, I can’t stand Gucci for women (nothing new or inspired since TF left). Being stylish is about being natural and comfortable in your ensemble. (I know what you’re thinking, but the reason I tell you the labels I’m wearing is to be informative.) "

I don't find her classy at all. I am quite sure the woman who she posted a picture of [do you think she got the woman's permission] agrees, nothing classy about her.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Is that a little snobby? Of course. Is it a lot bitchy? Obviously. But if you saw a girl carrying around an obnoxious purse at a party, you'd probably think the same thing. Mary is just kind of dumb so she blogs what should remain in her head. Its not like she posted a picture of the chick's face.

    ReplyDelete
  94. Its not like she posted a picture of the chick's face.

Except that it is, the 'chick' is completely identifiable, as her face is in the picture and recognizable.

It was a small house party. She is a bitch. You are falling for her 'lifecast' her online persona, not the real bitch that lies deep inside.

it's Rambo telling Donna Karen [her spelling not mine] shame on her for stealing M's purse.

Except that while she does not know how to spell she does know about libel, which is why she divulges that she didn't design the bag, she 'reconstructed' it. In other words, D.Karan stole the idea she stole from someone else. Yes, I feel very sorry for her.

"And what of Leven? Poor, sweet, innocent Leven. She had a sister for less than week before her fameball chasing sibling publicist scrubbed any mention of her sister Mary from Leven’s Wikipedia page. "

  97. I only own one purse, but it is recognizable and expensive. It was a gift from my entire office, after I returned to work following a round of chemotherapy. I carry it with pride. Am I supposed to leave it at home, so as not to offend Mary Rambin's delicate sensibilities?

I'm not bragging, Mary, you insufferable hag. I'm just toting my compact, keys, and wallet. What are you doing wearing designer shoes to the movie theater? Don't you care that children in Mumbai are going barefoot?

  98. oh she's wearing shoes WITHOUT the designer name/logo plastered all over it.. except of course she can't let it go unnoticed so she'll always be gracious enough to let you know they're YSL MARY JANES everytime she wears them. lmao. conspicuous consumption at its finest!
