Mary: Liberated

She rises from the Nonsociety ashes!

  1. Awww. I hope this works out for her. I like that it isn't just about her -- hint, hint.

  2. Congratulations Mary! The page looks pretty good. I love that she's enabled comments and that she's starting off with content in place AND "theme" days which I think will help organize her blog. I'd narrow the margin on the left with the links, cut it in half. I'd also make the food smaller at the top--the crab cake or whatever seems too big.
I like Mason on Couch as her bottom banner.

Is it the kind of content that most interests me? Not very much but let's see where she'll take it. It has me intrigued at the very least. And I do think there is a perfect audience already in place for this type of blog, especially if she were to get "spots" on the right kind of media (radio, tv, etc.).

    Cheers!

  3. There is something magnificent about the fact that the primary basis for her likability is simply that she isn't Julia Allison.

In that sense, Julia made Mary.

  4. Good for her. Maybe now she can afford to eat something and get some hair extensions. Or at least cut the working out to maybe just 2 hours a day and grow her hair out.

  5. Now THAT is a nice blog. Fluffy yet informative, there's plenty of daily material, a nice overall design, and comments are welcomed! That's what NS should've been like, so I give Mary kudos for being smart enough to realize how insanely flawed NS and its goofy design really is.
Although Mary's site is sorta coming off like a younger age-group version of Gweneth Paltrow's GOOP.

  6. It makes total sense that they did this over the holiday break.

Mary's launched a new blog, perhaps even a promising one. She got semi-decent exposure on gawker this weekend. On Meghan's blog, you find pictures of her and her old friends going out and being kinda wacky on the street. They're both having fun.

Julia's awake this morning and nowhere to be found. No press release or announcement or anything except "i will miss you xoxo" on twitter. I would feel sincerely a little sorry for her if she hadn't called her two ex-boyfriends gross and unattractive the other day. And she just burned another bridge with Mary. And I think she took Samantha with her? Sure they will do TMI together, but I think all the interns are gone too.

  7. where is the dirt on why she's leaving?? i guess that will come out in 6 months.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Wrong, it will come out in cryptic, passive aggressive tweets over the next two weeks. Bingo square if she posts a sympathy vimeo claiming to be happy for Mary, yet so confused and saddened by the way she left Julia all alone blah blah blah.

  9. Mary's redesign really highlights the flaws in Nonsociety's design. Even if Mary had wanted to do her "theme days" on Nonsociety it would not have worked. It's very difficult to read multiple entries as an overall narrative, linked together, on the Nonsociety site. Sometimes the posts read past to present and other times the posts on NS read present to past. Actually, Julia constantly posts items in the wrong order, forwards to backwards. Anyway, you get what I'm saying.

We read books on the vertical (for the post part) in this country. This is why websites designed on the vertical are easier to read. The landscape/mini screens (think Tumblr's Radar) work well because our eyes are naturally oriented to pick up points of information scattered throughout. Straight horizontal is a difficult sell. Anyone with spatial/dyslexic type issues (a lot of us) will be completely thrown/throne off by it.

  10. "Mom, not really sure where I would be without you."

I find a lot of ironic non-irony in Mary already.

  11. What a meaningless year so far for Julia.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Oh God. It's almost like I'm...happy for her. It's almost like I want to say, "Go Mary!" Almost.

  13. I have to admit that I most likely won't read Mary's blog at all after having looked at it today, but I also don't read women's magazines or GOOP and the likes because I don't find them THAT interesting. Nonetheless looks like a better package for this target audience. Let's hope she can live up to what the site promises.
Be that as it may, I've been trying to think how NS could have handled her exit possibly even less professional and couldn't come up with anything unless she had stormed out in a huff or Julia had theatrically declared her an outcast.

  14. Fran, I think they fed her calteens and then kicked her off the lunch table.

  15. Two words: Granny Pants.

    ReplyDelete
  16. That vest was disgusting!

    ReplyDelete
  17. can we talk about the mary/kodak association?

    ReplyDelete
  18. If you click on Mary on the NS page, it will take you direct to her More Than Mary website. The question is, are they planning on keeping it this way? Click on Mary and you'll get her blog, in a different format? It begs the question, why not have a Julia blog with links to her frenemies?

    ReplyDelete
  19. Julia already has that. It's called facebook.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I love that Mary's link to TMI says "Laugh at Me on TMIweekly." She knows it's a joke and she's just riding out the end of their contract. After that, she will probably sever ties completely with TMI and Nonsociety.

While I am no fan of Mary's special brand of vapid ignorance, it was classy of her to thank her old friends and business partners in a post and move on. Best of luck to her.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Oh holy, holy vertical scrolly...

    ReplyDelete
  22. The comments are all cheerleaderish, including one that I think is Sheryl Spencer, onetime fangirl. Oh how the praise must burn Jackles.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I'm happy for her, but seriously how boring, guys.

All she ever talks about is working out for crap sake. It's about as exciting as "Monty Monday". If I wanted to be condescendingly reminded of my lack of exercise I would post my pics on hotornot. I don't need some helmet haired scarecrow princess with no job except obsessing on her spin classes telling me to 'push' through my inability to get to a gym at 10:30am on Monday.

Some of us fucking work, Mary.

    ReplyDelete
  24. And for the record she wasn't working all night, she was faghagging around CT with that little pocket sized puff she's been gadding about with.

"a long night of work". Give me a fucking break, Mary.

    ReplyDelete
  25. *Partypants, I can hardly believe this is you. Seriously, we all know the content is lightweight at best. However, Mary is the only person, besides Forman, who has the balls to make a rather public break with the Yulia. Why so many people don't follow suit when they are sending sites like this and others tips all day (and they are) is beyond me.

*Also, if you read Adrien's blog, you'd see that he slept all night while Mary worked. Not exactly working in a coal mine but it's kinda obvious that she's willing to put in more than 5 minutes per day. Seriously, take a look a Julia's lifecast, even more Meghanaise, how much do they work?

This is not Team Mary vs. Team Julia. I'm just trying to get you to sit back and think for a minute.

I agree the first haircut, bob, was way better. I would never call this is "lesbian" haircut though. I've always wanted a short "do" and give all girls props, regardless of sexuality, for going in that direction.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Man, let's not get all worked up over yet one another irrelevant blog. I personally think it's boring, but thankfully I don't have to read it.
I did, however, read about not sleeping, working out and pushing oneself even harder when feeling exhausted and then praising sheer will power. This can go either way: endorphine rush or collapse, so work out and, more importantly, blog responsibly.

    ReplyDelete
  27. 1. Her hair is ugly. I don't care what her sexual leanings are, her. hair. is. ugly. It makes her look masculine to the extreme, especially with that 14 year old boy body she has over exercised her way into. That style is awful on her. End of discussion.

    2. Sitting up late blogging is not work. Just ask Emily Brill.

Look, yippity shit she swam to a glacier while SS Julia sinks. Good for her. But she better do a lot better than what I just saw on her "blog" if she expects people to stick around after the curiosity passes.

    ReplyDelete
  28. At least Julia has this 'what the hell is going to happen next', nasty, doomed, gasping and out of control freak show quality with its infinite comic potential.

Mary is just pasty white dull beyond measure. So good riddance as she gallops off into perfect vanilla white corporate pitch land. The only thing that could possibly interest me is if she engages in more of that insightful political commentary of hers.

    Teabag Mary!

So bring on another freak Julia and take it down a couple of notches - that's what I say.

    More stripper outfits at church!

  29. pp maybe she can stage a Julia Allison Baugher intervention and lifecast it that would get some views..:)

    ReplyDelete
  30. That's what I'm saying. Enough with all this feigned dignity. I want to see Corndog, Twizzler, and The One That Sort Of Reminds Me of Ann Curry just openly start tearing on each other. Bah, or passive-aggressively but at least completely in the open.

I want TMI to turn into Thanksgiving with my family in Dallas...awkward silence, snide asides about each others' well-known personal foibles, then brother Trip brings up That Incident and ALL HELL BREAKS LOOSE. Something like that I would watch.

    ReplyDelete
  31. don't like mary or her hairApril 13, 2009 at 1:39 PM

I agree with pp. not a fan.

    Site is boring.

She does not work for a living.

Why the hell would I listen to her?

I like how she has been praised for content, and she has nothing up yet.

    ick

  32. Sorry, but I just can't relate to people who don't have real 9-7 jobs...

    ReplyDelete
  33. Cool, good for Mary. Her site looks pretty nice, and also she looks gorgeous in the welcome video. Hope she rockets into success and Jankles is left fuming.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Good point, and I am stoked for her for that reason alone. I just don't think we should start with the fawning adoration just because she manages to not be Julia Allison. It's not like that's a rare skill, after all.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I'm glad Mary has her own blog now separate from that Nonsociety nonsense. But really her blog, so far at least and given what I know of her "content" in general, is nothing to write home about. I doubt I'll be visiting. Then again I don't visit NS either. Only RBNS.

Come to think of it, is RBNS going to include a RBMM section too? I kind of doubt there will be enough to parse to make that possible. But that's a good thing, not having enough trainwreck-worthy material to warrant having a blog parse your content. JA on the other hand looks poised to bring daily doses of trainwreck indefinitely.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I will heap praise upon Mary if only for the fact that it must drive Julia Allison crazy.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I just hope she implements my suggestion of WWMD and critique one of Julia's outfits each week - then model a better version of it.

Very passive aggressively, which works with the brand.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Hope she [mary] rockets into success?

How? By convincing all the other trust-fund bitches they should take her spin class once a month?

Must actually suck to know that the ones who like you only do so by default.

I am glad that my self-worth is not hinged to the collapse of Julia Allison.

    ReplyDelete
  39. What baffles me is, can Jabba not blog by herself? First she tried to create some kind of stupid couple blog and now a group blog. Can't she be the star without a chorus?

    ReplyDelete
  40. I think it's part of her keep people talking...

page views went up with both: the break-up and again with the break-up...

and apparently it doesn't matter if the talking is,
    talking shit.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Gawd, her hands are as big as her feet.

    ReplyDelete
  42. If Mary really wants to get loyal readers she will start dishing on Jackles NOW. Let's hear it, Rambo. Let's hear it all and let's hear it every day.

Mock her outfits. Tell us the stories. Fill us all in. Let us know what it was like to be up close and personal to such a vile lunatic.

You do that, and I'll be back all day, every day.

    ReplyDelete
  43. No partypants - Julia cannot be a star all by herself. She can barely be a star with group blogging. Mary proved that. Julia is outrageously boring and her "content" is crap - mediocre writing with pictures of airports and fences. Woo fucking hoo. She is actually a boring, uptight, straight laced person who has learned to distract from her boringness by dressing in crazy outfits and pulling attention grabbing stunts.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Eric, I think I love you. I promise if you will love me back I will put on a gold lame American Apparel anything and lipdub "Sussudio".

    ReplyDelete
  45. I think "Against All Odds" would be more fitting.

"So take a look at me now, well there's just an empty space" pretty much sums up Julia's entire adult life, no?

    ReplyDelete
  46. "How can I just walk awaaaaaaaaay from youuuuu" is also fitting.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Julia's real reaction:

    Psssst! Hey Mary...http://cache.gawker.com/assets/resources/2008/03/allisoncashmore.jpg

    ReplyDelete
  48. She's got Kodak as a sponsor, placed quite prominently on her blog. Nice one.

    ReplyDelete
  49. On the new blog, Mary's "Jesus help me now" face as she holds her glass of wine is funny. Must have been a "thinking about Julia" moment.

    I liked this:
    "Thoughts? Questions?
    Misplaced Internet Aggression?
    Send it all to Mary@morethanmary.com"

    ReplyDelete
  50. so are we going to have Rambingo or something now?

    ReplyDelete
  51. I think it's awesome she stepped out, but let's be honest: mary is not going to get more hits than NS.com. Julia brought all the hits there, and unless Mary keeps on appearing in gawker, i don't think she will get any push from the gawker gravy train either. her blog was way less interesting than Julia's (ie julia is the bigger fameball). i'm not hating, i think this is a good thing lol. Now, she might get more hits than her NS blog, but she's not building a bigger brand than NS.

also, what's with their codependency on Tumblr? If anything this should be a clue that your barrier of entry is super low if all you're doing is tying a series of tumblogs together and customizing them. Get your own hosting account, it's not like you have tons of traffic and bandwidth to pay for.

it's a failed business model at best. if anything she's just a girl with a blog like a billion other people. she just happens to have somebody's logo slapped on it. i wouldn't quit my day job over this.

lastly, my suspected theory is that mary was holding out for the word from the bravo deal that was valid until the end of march. once that was a NO, it looks like she hightailed it out of there. good move Mar. Meghan needs to follow suit.

    ReplyDelete
  52. i couldn't stop staring at her tits the whole time. nice bra, mare.

i assume the booby show was an homage to her old friend jules.

ps mary, i'm with partypants. if you want me to read your site, you best start dishing on julia. let's stop buttering the bread here and get to the dirt already.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I do hate her passive-aggressive dig at folks who work office jobs as if there are infinite numbers of jobs where people are paid to do nothing.
