Gonzo journalism, egoblogging. It's all the same in the end. Except one has better pictures* (and less acid).
Hunter Stockton Thompson (July 18, 1937 – February 20, 2005) was an American journalist and author, most famous for his novel Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. He is credited as the creator of Gonzo journalism, a style of reporting where reporters involve themselves in the action to such a degree that they become central figures of their stories. He is also known for his use of psychedelics, alcohol, firearms, and his iconoclastic contempt for authority.
Julia Allison (February 28, 1981 - ?) is an American journalist and “media personality,” most famous for being famous for being not at all famous. She is credited as the mascot of lifecasting (or, the more pejorative “egoblogging”), a style of real-time multi-media journaling where writers involve themselves in the action to such a degree that they become central figures of their stories. She is also known for her use of photobooth, “lip-dubs,” headbands, tutus, a sunny disposition and her iconoclastic contempt for authority, “rebloggers,” and/or the media gossip blog Gawker.
**Hunter never mastered “The Pose.”

Julia: This Time She's Gone Too Fucking Far

Also, nice to credit your sources, Julia! These are obviously wiki entries (I assume) but she provides no link nor sourcing.
ReplyDeleteEven Hunter S. Thompson (Mr. Renegade) credit his sources.
What a narcissist.
ReplyDeleteBTW, a question for other avid RBNS readers - are headbands just flat-out out of the question when you are Julia's age? I am a few months younger than her and wear them a lot, though JA and I choose very different styles (for instance, I shudder at the thought of wearing bows).
I wear thin plastic/ribbon headband for teaching. I have long layered hair and it helps keep it back while avoiding the dreaded pony tail. I don't do big bow or flower headbands, however.
ReplyDeleteI hope this fucking nitwit plagiarist in a tutu's post is seen by every editor, writer, and producer who would ever be in a position to do something for this shit-heel.
ReplyDeleteThis is hysterical, I think? We all know she probably learned who HT was from Karp or Jakob (her other bfs do not seem the type) -- or maybe just came across the Johnny Depp film somehow -- but it's clear she has no idea what Gonzo journalism is. Big mistake this time. HAHAHAH
ReplyDeleteI really ponder her thought patterns ... what would make someone write a post like that? Why? Julia: You have never mentioned HT once ever ever on your blog or expressed any sort of interest in him or that genre of writing. you must know this will upset a lot of readers, including male readers. This is just so stupid that it blows my mind. This will make even Gould and Sklar roll their eyes in disgust and pity. Go back to college and take a Journo course, please. ["Oh! I did! At Georgetown. I got a B in that class, now that youi mention it. :) ]
I'm not sure I like the TMZ-like shots on repeat though.
ReplyDelete"I'm not sure I like the TMZ-like shots on repeat though."
ReplyDeleteWell, we're looking for a Ralph Steadman drawing of green ingrown public hair bumps to go with Julia's new interest in Thompson, so be patient.
In order to be the central figure in a story, you have to FUCKING TELL A STORY. Not just blog what you had for desert last night.
ReplyDeleteRealization: She just wants her tumblarity to spike. So duh now that I think about it. HT posts attract a respected, well-read audience. Even a negative reblogs gives her "points" and she has already shown that she is not pleased at her current rating. Karp created the perfect Tumblr app for people like Julia -- so obsessed with popularity that they feel they need to somehow quantify it.
ReplyDeleteCunning and stupid.
Wow. Just. Wow. The comparison with the great Hunter Thompson, someone Julia probably hasn't even read--he didn't write airport books--might be the most offensive thing the jackass has yet written.
ReplyDeleteCurrently in San Diego. Isn't the braying one supposed to be here soon? Doing some sort of exhibition with Orca at Sea World? Seriously. Isn't SW in her gonzo itinerary?
I have said it before and I'll say it again, if Hunter S. Thompson had known a soulless, talentless ditz like this was comparing herself to him, he would have asked to be blown out of the cannon long before his memorial service.
ReplyDeleteJack-
ReplyDeleteYes, she'll be at the Manatee Festival, I believe. Please give her, and her fellow species, my regards.
You know what? I support this.
ReplyDeleteSomeone get her tripping on acid, give her a gun, and leave her alone in a Vegas hotel room.
TI--
ReplyDeleteChrist, there went the neighborhood. But why the Manatee Fest? This isn't some faux conference. I still don't get what the fuck she'd be doing here in San Diego for such an event. Well, other than braying with the animals.
Her latest HST related post:
ReplyDeleteOh yeah? Did Hunter S. Thompsen ever have yellow nails?
I DON’T THINK SO.
JA - 1
HST - 0
HORRIFYING!
@ Jack
ReplyDeleteSome kind of media publicity day for the new sea world (in fl) roller coaster. Julia does theme park press now...
In her follow-up post, she misspells "Thompson."
ReplyDeleteIDIOT.
ReplyDeleteI hope she Tweets some of these HST atrocities. They will be vicious.
Also? Hunter Thompson wasn't fat.
ReplyDeleteThis post popped up on my Tumblr dashboard. The fixes gave me lulz.
ReplyDeletehttp://winstonwolfe.tumblr.com/post/109255122/gonzo-journalism-egoblogging-its-all-the-same-in
PS - Thanks, TJ, for making me feel secure in my headbands.
Re: Headbands...with the right hairstyle you can rock a headband into your twenties. Julia, on the other hand is trying to evoke a fictional high school character from a tv show (Blair Waldorf) with her look and therefore has failed on multiple levels.
ReplyDeleteShe's going to be the butt of many o tumblr jokes in the next few days. Watch the Gallery, Jules, you're going to be a regular.
ReplyDeleteGrrrrr! I JUST SENT HER THIS EMAIL:
ReplyDeleteI'll tell you if I get anything back.
Dear Julia,
I read your soi-disant 'egoblog' for laughs and I'm no humorless
fangirl. I have never written to anyone about their blog. But you
have simply gone too far with your post on Hunter S Thompson.
Thompson was a longtime reporter, short story writer and two time
novelist - albeit rejected novelist - before he ever got his first
book deal and adopted the 'gonzo ' persona. His prose jumps off the
page with so much imagery, energy and wit that it almost obscures his
taut underlying structure and pacing.
He was a serious, insightful and impressive American writer on the
American dream, politics, and the times he lived in. His best work
rivals Joan Didion and Thomas Wolfe and he stands beside them in the
creation and execution of a new form of non-fiction. According to
Wikipedia he "used a typewriter to copy F. Scott Fitzgerald's The
Great Gatsby and Ernest Hemingway's A Farewell to Arms in order to
learn about the writing styles of the authors". In other words, the
man uncomplainingly worked his ass off for years to master his
craft, trying, failing, and trying again until he found his style -
which embodied the spirit of a generation.
Also, Thompson committed suicide, which is deeply painful for his
family and fans. Just from decent respect, that's not really someone
who should be invoked lightly as a justification for your life.
From your all too public record of your life and career, I know that
have never done anything that comes even close to approaching the
dedication, mastery of craft and plain humble hard work that Thompson embodies. The only thing he and you share is a gift for self promotion and making a persona. But he backed up his persona with real work and, finally, mastery of a difficult and demanding craft. What backs up your persona?
Please don't bother writing me back telling me to "lighten up" Some
of us write for a living and take our work seriously. If you haven't
put put in the work to learn how to become a real craftsperson it
just makes you look bad when you compare yourself to those who have. After spending my weekdays teaching writing and my weekends doing my own writing I'm not in the mood to hear lame defenses from someone who doesn't know what they are talking about.
You said recently on your blog that you wanted to be more
introspective and authentic. Maybe you should consider some plain
humble hard work - like Hunter's. Until then, I wouldn't recommend you invoke your betters to justify yourself. It just makes you look
desperate, childish and ill informed.
Sincerely,
( redacted)
PS: As for his photos, enjoy: http://www.mbfala.com/exhibitions/_22/_img/
She thinks her contempt for authority is iconoclastic? Silly rabbit, it's evidence of the extent of her daddy issues and hilarious coming from a total control freak. I get it now; she's full of self-loathing!
ReplyDeleteFear and Self-Loathing in Wilmette Coming to a liecast near you this summer.
ReplyDeleteIs this serious? It must be a joke. This is aggresively insane.
ReplyDelete9:10 -- let us know if she responds.
ReplyDeleteSo I'm confused. Why did she post this? I assume she wrote her own Wikipedia entry. Is she actually bragging about ripping off Hunter S. Thompson's entry and just replacing a few choice words?
Anon 9:10
ReplyDeleteHere's what you'll get back.
"I find it so strange you're taking my post so seriously!"
That's not her wikipedia entry.
ReplyDeleteSomeone ought to update her wikipedia entry to include all the ridiculous crap she's done in the past year and a half.
We can't figure out what this is from because Julia has not credited her source.
ReplyDeleteIt's his wikipedia entry and something she wrote herself (or isn't available anywhere else on the net).
ReplyDeleteYou're right, Julia, HST never wore yellow nail polish. You win. You really, really win. Put a gold medal on a ribbon around your neck, spread your legs, and masturbate for your dog.
ReplyDelete@Anon 9:10PM - Well said!
ReplyDeleteAnd seriously? How DARE YOU take the name of Hunter S. Thompson in vain, you stupid fucking CUNT. What's next? Bukowski quotes? Fuck you and the fucking headband you rode in on.
And this guy nails it (from http://winstonwolfe.tumblr.com, posted above):
"WW's retort to: Gonzo journalism, egoblogging. It's all the same in the end. (Except HST never plagiarized in college that forced a name change...even on acid)
Julia Baugher (February 28, 1981 - ?) is far from being a credible American journalist and is a “media personality” in her own delusional mind, mostly not famous (ask any intelligent person on the street) for being famous for being not at all famous except, pssst, she really does think she’s famous!! She is credited for bullshitting others into calling her the mascot of her lazy style of lifecasting (or, the more pejorative “egoblogging”), a style of never actually in real-time multi-media journaling where writers crowbar themselves in the action to such a degree that they become central figures of their own fictional stories, in a contrived fashion. She is also known for her obnoxious use of photobooth, unbearable to witness “lip-dubs”, headbands, tutus, a completely fake disposition and her transparent love for authority figures, “rebloggers” that she desperately needs for her “business” to be successful, and/or the media gossip blog Gawker whose attention she craves.
**Hunter never mastered “The Pose” beacause he did not suffer fools gladly
PS. HAHAHAHA
*Fixed* in the same way she post edited the “PS. HAHAHA” in at the end. Now that she is truly infamous for.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hunter_S._Thompson
ReplyDeleteAs usual no clarifying that the words are not hers. What a "journalist" she is (sarcasm). Wikipedia, even though it's multiauthored stillshould be cited and the words, which are taken from there verbatim and are not written by her, should be in quotes. How many times will she continue to plaigiarize?
Anon 9:41
ReplyDeleteDon't take her so seriously when she says she's a journalist? Okay? And if you have a problem with her then just...have a nice day!!! xoxoox bunies :)
Somone should screenshot her plagiarism before/if she's pressured into listing a source and using quote marks like she was pressured into a "full disclosure" with her b.s juice review
ReplyDeleteIt's a bit like all the quotes and lyrics she puts on twitter with NO quotation marks or sources cited. that is plagarism
9:44
ReplyDeleteThe person who wrote that is a far better writer than I. Nice try!
Anyone else notice that Randi Z has been awfully quiet lately?
ReplyDeleteARGH! I"m the letter writer from 9:10! i just got a response from Julia:
ReplyDeleteLighten up :)
You guys called it!
Good lord! Its funny when we're just making fun of her, but the fact that this is how this woman actually addresses real humans trying to tell her real things??
My head *implodes*
My reply to Julia:
ReplyDeleteReally, that's all you have to say?
Really?
Even with all the nasty things people say about you, I'm shocked to
receive this. I guess I hoped you had a conscience. Or some
consideration. Or some seriousness behind your recent posts about
becoming less emptily provocative.
I guess the theory is true: you posted that just to piss people off
and improve your stats. Its just a morally repugnant bummer when you
happen to use a brilliant suicided writer to advance yourself.
I guess I only have myself to blame for being sucked into your
narcissistic net.
But I have to wonder: can you really wonder that you are so reviled,
when you behave this way? What exactly are you going for in all this?
Do you even know anymore?
Please don't bother to reply. Just think about it for yourself.
Because you're acting like a three year old.
And I'm sure this isn't the first time you've heard this.
Best Redacted
But I give up. Its like rewarding a child for having a tantrum. Wow the lady is NARCISSISTIC NUTS. I feel like I dated her for years just from this one go round. Phew.
Does this mean she's going to kill herself now?
ReplyDeleteFrom Julia again;
ReplyDeletedon't worry so much! believe me, I don't.
Have a great day
:)

PS. Hunter would have found this - and your overblown reaction - hysterical.
PPS. Yes, I knew I would get that kind of reaction. Kinda played right into it, didn't you? ;)

But from your posts you DO worry about "it". That is your lack of
self. Constantly. As for what Hunter would think, I don't think either
of us is in a place to know what he would think of anything. But OK,
you win, does that make you happy?, Giving you more attention is like
rewarding a child for a tantrum. Strikes me as an odd way to live.
from Julia
ah, it's just fun. It made me laugh.
Good lord I realize this could go on forever. Jeebus. I actually have to go work now.
I no longer subscribe to the school of thought that she may not have SEVERE mental issues.
ReplyDeletePart of me loves getting self-righteous people riled up. It's a terrible habit, it really is. But ...errr... why am I grinning right now? ;)

She fucking sucks. BLECH.
SHE IS STARK RAVING MAD!!
ReplyDeleteNow she is SPEAKING for Hunter S. Thompson as though she knows a fucking thing about him other than what Jakob Lodwick or Ben Leventhal probably mentioned to her?
NO!!! NO NO NO !!!!
I'm out. But wow man. Yikes.
ReplyDeletePeriod inside the parenthesis.
ReplyDelete(...acid.)
She is stupid.
Big deal. She threw a childish temper tantrum to drum up some attention. Writing her outraged emails is just giving her exactly what she wants. If you ignore the braying fat beast, she will slink away into her cave.
ReplyDeleteThere is no way this woman has read any of Hunter Thompson's work. Though she is probably wikipedia'ing Fear and Loathing and Generation of Swine right now, in case someone calls her on it.
