Brother Britt: Making Progress?

It appears my sister is attempting to pretend she's in on the joke. The team of psychiatrists and other mental health professionals mother and father have consulted for some time believe this could be a positive step in my sister's psychological development. I remain alarmed, however, that she clearly paid someone to laugh maniacally throughout this presentation, and that she also reveals a level of seething, hateful bitterness towards old paramours she treated with contempt. Not to mention how clearly angry she is at an introduction she didn't feel paid her enough homage. This cannot be healthy and certainly does not suggest she is letting life unfold. Lord help us.

TJ, the funny thing is that she says at the beginning that this talk would not be useful and at the end she says she wouldn't give "this particular talk" at MIT, yet it is almost exactly the same as her MIT talk (I was there)...

  2. Watching this made me sad. I can only hope my daughters don't go down this "career" path.

  3. She really doesn't realize how pathetic and fucked up she is. She truly is insane.

  4. The bitterness is palpable in this clip, bitterness that she is in a seedy basement pub and was introduced by someone who couldn't care less about her and then basically had to outline for people what a complete loser/joke she is. The maniacal laughter made it even more creepy. Was it Meghan? It was totally too loud and inappropriate.

This is really one of the most pathetic moments of her "career." And seriously, what did Jakob ever do to her to deserve such continuing scorn other than break up with her because she was so critical, smothering and high-maintenance (if that blog is any indication)?

  6. Still dropping Lodwick's name - twice in this talk, and that was a relationship of just three months.

And man does she like to burn bridges. What cable news network would hire her after watching that?

  7. Loren,

Is this the same presentation she gave at that panel at which you spoke as well? You mentioned something about her 'going over time and talking about herself for 40 minutes'. Is this really her powerpoint for all occasions?!

I read your comment below. Excellent thoughts and we actually agree. I think we just got our wires crossed for a second. I absolutely understand your reaction.

This talk is her only talk. I don't think there are others; just longer and shorter versions.

What she needs to do is go totally offline for six months. No Tweeting, no blogging -- create some demand. Then come back and blog with some intelligence and insight and with something to actually say about what it's like to drop out.

But she won't. She can't. She has an addiction.

  13. Narcissism shining through? Do you all notice how energized she is when talking about and showing pictures of herself comparied with the awkward nodding, blinking, fidgeting, "yeah, yeah, yeah" thing she does when other people talk on TMI or when she does an interview?

I thinks she only comes to life when she is at the center of attention and only when her image is the subject of that attention. Talking in front of people doesn't seem to be enough. It doesn't seem to be a performance thing like with actors where they light up anytime they are in front of an audience. She has to be talking about herself in order to get the satisfaction or so it seems to me.

She can't create demand because she has already shot her proverbial load. Is there anything more about this person you want to know? I doubt it.

Most people are just rooting for the bad guy (or girl) to get her comeuppance. No one is rooting for her to succeed. They just want her voted off the island/denied the rose/aut'ed/told to pack her knives/have her check voided and have her tour end here.

  17. Hmm, out of ll the things I have seen of her on video this def was more enjoyable. She wasn't yapping about inventing blogging or lifecasting or the internet. she was honest about how much of a loser she is. i think of course she is trying to use reverse psychology on the audience to make them believe shes in on the joke...but really she's not.

i feel bad for her, but I was surprised that to answer the Q about what she's to now was speaking at MIT and TMI being on a random ass channel is what she's only up to. must really be a slow life these days, Jules.

  19. Jankles is so NOT funny, it's embarrassing. When will someone pull her aside and tell her to stop giving these 'talks'? Not funny. Not clever.

    Pathetic and sad.

And I was wondering the same thing as Anon 8:02PM - was that Meghan laughing inappropriately in the background?

    ReplyDelete
  20. anon 8:31

I noticed that too, the mit talk which was for a student group and tmi was all she had to point to, that an the occasional talk. there was also no mention of nonsociety at all. maybe it's over basically and web shows are going to be their only focus? it's not like there's been any real content since soon after it started

    ReplyDelete
  21. @8:34

And when she responds to the question with the statement that she's doing speaking engagements, she makes it seem like she would NEVER give a shitty ass insidery talk like the one she had just gave. She says she won't be giving it at MIT. Yet, on the thread below and this one (see top comment) someone who was at MIT reports hearing this exact speech.

  22. Posted in the wrong thread:

That vimeo of the non-motivational... I'm assuming she put together those shit-looking powerpoint slides in a massive rush or is just terribly unacquainted with the program. Amazing how a "new media" innovator can't come up with something, oh, I don't know... innovative? Yuck. Her self-deprecation is fake, an act due to how uncomfortable she feels and how negative her press presented there has been. I'm not at all surprised she took that angle, she had no alternative.

Why is she dressed like she's accompanying her husband to the Indiana Dental Society's annual dinner?

  24. Underneath the self-deprecating shtick, it's the same old delusions of grandeur -- so glad to hear she let Steve Forbes know "when she saw him" about the dig against her. Steve Forbes wouldn't know her from a lamppost. She just projects a slatternly self-loathing that makes her self-aggrandizement look utterly pathological. Fun clip!

  30. TJ - it's not even that hard to put together a decent Powerpoint since it's largely point-and-click. Granted this wasn't as big as whatever conference she attended with Krystal (where the big difference was -- color! And a recent, inappropriate pic added to it, which served more to prove unpreparedness than creativity!) but she literally slapped on text and photos, then played it out verbally as sarcastically as possible. Perhaps that the title of the series was "non-motivational", ended up getting her down and she wanted to poke fun at both it and herself (for no other reason but to look like she took herself less seriously than it appears). Fail on all counts because no matter how hard she tries to portray herself as in on the joke, EVERYONE knows how crazy she is about control of her image - and perception, peopleeee - on the internet. Fruitless effort for someone who wouldn't be so exhausted if she weren't faking it so hard in the first place.

  31. It seems like RBNS is all you've got now, Jankles. Gawker doesn't give a crap about you. Loren Feldman does the occasional video. Reblogging Julia can't even be bothered anymore.

And once RBNS tires of laughing at your loathsome personality and narcissism? Hopefully, you will quietly fade away, back to Chicago. Where you'll lick your wounds, drowning your sorrows in cupcakes, old lipdub videos and late night Oprah re-runs.

I also like how Happy Endings is now like ~that seedy basement pub~. I mean, ok it's seedy, but it's not the trashiest place in the world. It's not like she gave this talk at the Hole circa 2003, or even at Down the Hatch or some shit.

Julia will love that Cache gown! She enjoys an empire waist float dress to hide those new curves.

  39. EIC of WIRED, Chris Anderson, told Jankles that he thought of asking her to be on the cover when he saw how she responded to being voted the third most hatred person on the internet. She responded in a self-deprecating manner, something to the effect "you hate me, you really hate me" and he found that endearing so methinks she is going to run with that sentiment in hopes of continued relevance and however unlikely, more magazine cover offers?!
    Have a great day! XO

    ReplyDelete
  40. "Her self-deprecation is fake"
    totally agreed

total jing: I think mabye two or more commenters mentioned hearing this talk before, an anon or two and "Michelle"

8:59: she also may have made the talk sarcastic and cynical because I think one of the speakers from the same talk that night started his speech by saying he did not think internet fame translated to wealth or power. and i think julia's premise and business plan has been based on the opposite of that. i think she didn't want to come off all naive and presumptous by saying she thought she believes she could get rich off her notoriety.

remember her "fuck you money" video? it was basically the opposite tone and message from what she said here. I think that (the fuck you money/sell nonsociety for big bucks, etc.) is what she really believes but she just acted cynical here because she thought it would look stupid given the context to say otherwise.

after all isn't her whole business based on her using her "fame" to make money and sell products because people will flock to buy whatever julia recommends or mentions? she says exactly that in her video interview with chris anderson from wired and has said so many other times too. but here she acts all nonchalant about it?! she is beyond fake, just saying whatever she thinks will make her come across better at the time

what I don't get is what made this talk different since usually she seems to have no problem maintaining these delusions of grandeur. maybe it really was the parsons teacher who stated clearly that he didn't believe fame = power OR money?

    ReplyDelete
  41. You know... I have to say... the truth is - that talk was actually pretty (and intentionally) funny. That so many here can't see that says more about them than it does about Julia.

  45. I agree it was pretty polished and humorous in its own way. finding it funny personally and acknowledging there is humour in it are not the same thing.

i didn't laugh once and it wasn't personally funny to me because to me it comes across as fake, self conscious and much more. that doesn't mean I don't give her credit for some humorous comments and delivery.

i think you're presumptious in assuming that other people don't recognize humor within the talk just because that might not be what they chose to talk about in their comments or because they personally may not have found it funny. either that or you are just one of the many who come here to try to prove some point about the commenters here in which case presume all you want

    ReplyDelete
  48. No 9:21, it really doesn't. That talk went the way it did because she has zero legitimate accolades to drop in for the presentation. Add to that the fact that she's considered a non-motivational speaker by a small fry group and her presentation takes place in a bar. If you really think there's anything more to this than her pathology and all it has represented for years, you're a bit misguided. She is not being self-deprecating/"funny" because it's how she is or how she wants to be, it's because if any of these people googled her extensively enough, the slew of negative press would present a different story than what she implies. Rather than acknowledge she's the butt of the joke (duh), she'll try to act as if she's in on it and has done much of it on purpose so as to protect herself from what people see and thenceforth hear that she CAN'T control. Her attitudes were not at all this way when she was in the process of any of the acts presented on the powerpoint; they are how she must present them in light of the fact that all of it has left her with nothing at the end of the day and she's supposed to be a speaker of prestige telling others how to do whatever it is she does. It is nothing, and as such, she must present it as something bigger. Now she's being a character and sarcastic. When the internet laughs at her in response she'll be human and melancholy tomorrow.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I am not as intense a hater here as some, but I didn't find it funny at all ... I found it really sad. I mean she's basically describing the descent of what was a marginally successful career just a couple of years ago and why? Because people dislike her. She cannot see that she is an unlikable person and it's her fault. For the first time, I felt sad for how utterly un-self-aware she is. She is in for a major day of reckoning if she doesn't take some personal responsibility for her ruined career.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  52. you know, while so much of the criticism on here certainly has its roots in something real, i felt sorry for julia when i saw this clip, and a little guilty for all the time i've wasted gloating on this web site. she seems like someone with genuine potential (skills at networking, ambition, and halfway decent writing and speaking skills) who was so used to riding on her talent and her looks that she never really learnt the value of working hard and putting your head down. and when she couldn't be the "best" anymore, she opted to be the worst. i think she probably should have listened to rachel sklar or whoever told her to wear turtlenecks and keep her head down - and that getting a regular job, rather than monetizing "infamy", is probably her best bet at this point. but she's so used to not having to work hard, that i doubt she'd be able to do it.

  55. you said it much better than I could anon 9:35. I'm the anon with the poor capitalization in several of the comments above.

anon 9:37 I don't think she'll take responsiblity because I don't think she can bear to face the reality. I think that's why she does so much massaging of her image. it's not just for the public perception, it's for herself too. that's my theory anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  56. you shouldn't feel sorry, you shouldn't feel guilty. She's recognized the errors of her behavior many times and ignored it. The errors of her behavior have been pointed out by friend and significant others (who loved her and we're to believe she loved in return) enough times. That she's willing to ignore all of that in pursuit of fame, money, status, whatever it may be, isn't necessarily indicative that "she deserves it", but that she's unwisely chosen a path to follow. If she cared enough about herself, she would do what was necessary to get better. That said, she doesn't seem to value herself enough to slow down and reevaluate, and if her own family and close friends/SOs can't help her with that, who really can?

    ReplyDelete
  57. I have difficulty feeling sorry for Toolia because she chooses to place herself in these situations - demands attention, deliberately incites outrage and then acts all poor widdle me when the coverage goes sour.

The syntax used in this statement is v Julia:

  68. Julia's latest tweet about meeting Gloria Steinem really pisses me off for some reason. I think one of her most loathsome habit is the way she invokes feminism whenever it seems to benefit her, despite having no concept of what feminism actually stands for. If she did understand it, she would understand that most of her values and much of her behavior is decidedly anti-feminist. I would call it hypocritical, but she's so willfully incurious that she doesn't even know enough to know she's being hypocritical. It's just downright, inexcusable ignorance and it makes me inordinately angry.

I can just imagine Julia meeting Gloria Steinem. "Oh hai there! Iz a femnininist 2! Wanna take a kissy face pic wit me??"

I met Steinem myself recently (at an open-to-the-pubic academic conference - I don't have any super special friends or important connections), and I was humbled by how strong her presence is. She's an intellectual heavyweight. She is poised, measured and well-spoken, but also gracious and unassuming. She is the complete opposite of Julia in all the best possible ways. And what irks me the most is that Julia isn't even intelligent or perceptive enough to realize it. She's probably walk away from dinner thinking that she and Gloria really clicked.

Now, we'll just keep this our little secret, right? No need to tell the Mrs. Don't get me wrong, I love my Julia. But she's never really been the kind of girl who loved sex. Let's just say we have an 'understanding'.

How does this sound? You girls come on out to Indy. I book us a suite at the Indy Marriott. Just take a look at how AWESOME this place is:

Am I right?!! Actually, Julia was the one who discovered this place. You know how she loves a 'chic' atmosphere. That girl is 100% C-L-A-S-S.

After we get a few cocktails in us, we head up to the suite for the REAL party! My man Ewald knows what time it is. Dr. Gary and the Ewald-ster will show you girls a REAL good time.

Total Jing, don't you worry. We'll hit Ruby Tuesdays for a late breakfast after we're done 'partying' (heh heh).

If I were her "life coach," I would advise her to leave New York, get offline, and go do something worthwhile with her life like yes, the Peace Corps or something. She needs to put everything in perspective and realize how pointless her existence has been, her chase for fame at any cost, and above all else her braying.

  85. Oh dear, at the end when she answers the question of what she's doing now I literally cringed. I'm...uh... on a show no one will ever see. I have to plans or way of legitimizing my alleged "career" but I just.. uh.. hope it will.. uh.. happen.

I don't feel bad for her, but sometimes I do empathize for a minute. She's literally run out of all options and any hope at success. It must be terribly depressing at 28 years old.

  87. This presentation was like the photographic version of an autograph book. It's just "Here's me with (insert basically anyone here)". I could go over to my Nana's and look at her Scrapbook of All My Cats Ever book and work up more excitement.

  88. why doesn't she just be honest about what she's going to do in the future? "I'm going to do my stupid blog and ride this internet fame thing out as long as possible, accepting EVERY tv appearance that comes my way to talk about Britney's underwear, and I'm going to keep posing with famous people and keep exploiting my relationship with Randi to get invited to events I have no business being at, until daddy stops paying the bills and my rent and either makes me go to grad school, or i find a rich husband."

if she were just honest like, ever, i might loathe her just a tad less.

oh god. can't believe the shitty powerpoint presentation, especially for a "tech nerd" or whatever. and her public speaking skills? horrific. she could not make a clear, concise point. she brayed "um" about a million times. she kept trailing off, lowering the volume and speeding up her pace. AWFUL. i really am shocked. i thought the one thing she could do well was speak in public. i've never seen one of her cable news appearances, but she had to be better than that on tv, right?!?!?!
and the content of this powerpoint prez? weak. the whole "bonus points" framing device was tired by slide three. why not actually give point value to things, to up the comedic value a bit?!?!? or come up with something funnier? clearly, THROWN TOGETHER shit, at the last minute. this is why she has failed. julia: you need to learn how to work. put time into things. effort. what a case this girl is, jesus.
